November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month

Diabetes is a leading cause of vision loss among Americans, and committing to getting a diabetic eye exam annually is an important step in preserving your sight. Ninety percent of severe vision loss from diabetes can be avoided by visiting your ophthalmologist annually and by controlling your diabetes. More than 24 million people in the United States have diabetes and less than half are not getting a recommended dilated eye exam. Among the Hispanic/Latino America population, 2.5 million (9.5%) have diabetes. Furthermore, nearly half of all adult Hispanic/Latino individuals in the United States with diabetes have some type of diabetic retinopathy.
